Mapping/GIS

What Is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a structure for collecting, managing and analyzing spatial data. GIS applications allow users to work with the data, and visualize it with maps. We can use maps derived in GIS to help better understand spatial patterns and relationships, increase value and efficiency of public services by sharing information faster and easier, record keeping, and to plan for the future.

The ability to answer questions through the analysis of spatial data is where GIS truly excels. Here are some examples of questions that GIS can help answer:

  • What are the analytics for development costs?

  • What do spatial implementations look like for developments and subdivisions?

  • What do the cumulative effects from developments look like?

  • How are assets visually represented within a community?

  • How close are developments to an lake or oil well?

  • Where are the areas with high crime rates?

  • What impact will a transportation network have on the landscape?
